Newsflash:

Prosperity Not Austerity

Progressive Democrats of America and our partners ask you to take a simple message to the President, both your Senators, and your Congress member: "We Need Prosperity Not Austerity." PLEASE USE YOUR OWN WORDS AND CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINES.

Educate your elected officials that they must fight for us and support Prosperity Not Austerity. They must reject any deal that cuts Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. They must enact fair policies to stimulate the economy. They must rein in out-of-control spending on obsolete weapons and end the war in Afghanistan. Specifically, ask them to:

1. Invest in jobs, education and infrastructure to promote prosperity by enacting legislation to create jobs for all.

2. Let the Bush tax cuts and payroll tax cuts expire, and replace them with a Financial Speculation Tax and fair income tax cuts, limited to the first $250,000 of income.

3. Prevent any cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid including benefits, COLAs, or eligibility--as well as pass bills to expand and improve Medicare.

4. Cut weapons funding by 25%, and responsibly end the War in Afghanistan via the safe and orderly withdrawal from Afghanistan of all members of the Armed Forces and Department of Defense contractor personnel.

Austerity makes economic problems worse, not better. Only strong, effective stimulative measures can remedy the stubborn lack of demand in the economy. Austerity measures in Europe are exacerbating the economic crisis there. Austerity measures lengthened and deepened the Great Depression here in the USA. We must not emulate erroneous European policies nor repeat tragic mistakes of the past.

Progressive Democrats of America

Progressive Democrats of America

Progressive Democrats of America was founded in 2004 to transform the Democratic Party and our country. We seek to build a party and government controlled by citizens, not corporate elites-with policies that serve the broad public interest, not just private interests. As a grassroots PAC operating inside the Democratic Party, and outside in movements for peace and justice, PDA played a key role in the stunning electoral victories of November 2006 and 2008. Our inside/outside strategy is guided by the belief that a lasting majority will require a revitalized Democratic Party built on firm progressive principles.

For over two decades, the party declined as its leadership listened more to the voices of corporations than those of Americans. PDA strives to rebuild the Democratic Party from the bottom up-from every congressional district to statewide party structures to the corridors of power in Washington, where we work arm in arm with the Congressional Progressive Caucus. In just a couple of years PDA and its allies have shaken up the political status-quo on issues from ending the Iraq war, voter rights, protecting Social Security, a full employment economy, national healthcare and economic justice.
