Get the Scoop on Montgomery BRT: A panel discussion with members of the Montgomery County Transit Task Force
Wednesday, August 8, 7 p.m.
(Doors open 6:30 p.m.)
Silver Spring Civic Center
1 Veterans Place, Silver Spring, MD
Together with the light-rail Purple Line, the BRT network has the potential to transform Montgomery County by offering a speedy, less stressful alternative to sitting in choking traffic. The Transit Task Force just finalized a year's worth of work and technical studies to craft the BRT network proposal. They envision a system that would feature:
• Dedicated lanes to increase speed and reliability
• Permanent stations/stops with pre-boarding fare collection to speed boarding
• Level boarding through multiple doors just like Metrorail
• Frequent service that minimizes times between vehicles
• Real-time, visual "next bus" information
• Modern vehicles with comfortable interiors with wireless internet and other conveniences.
Panel:
Mark Winston, Glazer Winston, Chair Montgomery Transit Task Force
Francine Waters, Lerner, Task Force Member
Tina Slater, Action Committee for Transit, Task Force Member
Dan Wilhelm, Montgomery County Civic Federation, Task Force Member
Moderated by Stewart Schwartz, Executive Director, Coalition for Smarter Growth
Presentations by the panel will be followed by a question and answer period.
The Coalition for Smarter Growth believes our region and Montgomery County must invest in a Next Generation Transit Network to address traffic congestion, improve access to jobs, support sustainable communities, and maintain economic competitiveness. For Montgomery County, we believe that the "three-legged stool" for Next Generation Transit investment should be strengthening Metro, building the Purple Line, and building a complementary network of BRT.
We also firmly believe that extensive community involvement and input is essential in planning for the future of the county. Public input helps to identify issues, solve problems, and refine proposals to meet local conditions. So we hope that you will join us for an in-depth discussion about the BRT proposal.
