Current Actions

  • Demand that Congress Rejects the DARK Act!

    Representative Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) has introduced legislation dubbed the Deny Americans the Right-to-Know Act (DARK Act), which would deny consumers the right to know if there are genetically engineered ingredients in their food. We need you to take immediate action and tell Congress you support mandatory GE labeling!

    Your Representative is on the fence about this bill and needs to hear from you.

    Just Label It needs you to demand that your Representative rejects the DARK Act before this hearing!

  • Take action to oppose the new 2,4-D-resistant GE crops!

    The Environmental Protection Agency is considering an application by Dow Chemical Co. to use a combination of glyphosate, the chemical in Monsanto’s Roundup, with 2,4-D, a highly toxic weed killer, on genetically engineered corn and soybeans designed to withstand 2,4-D.

    If the Dow application is approved, the 2,4-D experiment would roll out on a grand scale: likely on tens of millions of acres, leading to 2,4-D pollution of food, water, residential areas and wildlife habitat. We need to do everything we can to make sure the EPA keeps this toxic weed killer away from our food and out of our environment.

    The EPA is now seeking comments from the public and that window is about to close. Before the EPA makes its final decision, the agency’s leadership needs to hear from YOU right now. Stand with JLI today to protect human health and the environment: Tell the EPA not to approve Dow’s application of 2,4-D herbicide for use on genetically engineered crops!

  • Support SB 1381 - GE labeling in California

    The California State Senate will vote on SB 1381 this week. This bill would give Californians the information we need to make more informed decisions about what foods we eat and give to our families by requiring genetically engineered foods sold in California to be labeled. It is NOT a BAN on GE foods.

    This week’s vote is a make or break moment: if we win, the bill moves to the Assembly. If we lose, then the fight is over for this session. You must make your voice heard right now.

    Use the form below to tell your state senator to vote yes on SB 1381!

    Tell the FDA We Have a
    RIGHT
    ...to know if Gentically Engineered Organisms (GMOs) are in our food

    We have a right to know about food we eat and feed our families, but under current regulations, we don’t have that ability when it comes to genetically engineered (GE) foods.

    The number and variety of GE foods reaching grocery shelves is accelerating without proper regulation or human health testing, and most importantly, without labels.

    We need people like you to contact our policymakers in Washington, to demand the right to know about the food we are eating.

    Luckily, there are some brands we know we can trust. They care about the food you eat, and they value transparency.

    Take our friends at Organic Valley, for example. For more than 25 years, they have produced food for our communities that honors the health and the welfare of people, animals and the earth.

    Organic Valley is a mission-driven cooperative, owned by family farmers, and have been leaders in organic agriculture from the very beginning. As a partner of Just Label It, they believe that consumers have a right to know about what they put in their bodies.

    So do more than 90% of Americans; but without mandatory labeling, we are left in the dark about which foods contain genetically engineered ingredients. We deserve the right to know what we're buying, so that we can make the best choices for what we eat and feed our families.

    Take our friends at Applegate, for example. For more than 25 years, their goal has been to "change the meat we eat."

    Applegate works hard to make the types of food people love to eat - like hot dogs, deli meat and bacon - with clean ingredients, and meat sourced from farmers who raise animals humanely; without the use of antibiotics or hormones. Their line of certified organic products is free of genetically engineered ingredients, and their full list of products will be free of GE ingredients by early 2014.

    Tell your Senators: Reject the Biotech Rider!

    The biotech industry has quietly inserted a dangerous policy rider into the Continuing Resolution (CR), now being debated on the Senate floor - and voted on as early as tomorrow morning.  This rider would negate any meaningful judicial review of the USDA's decisions to allow planting of GE crops.

    Bottom line? This proposal will reduce the oversight of genetically engineered foods, and allow powerful interests to interfere with our right to know about our food.

    Senator Tester has introduced an amendment to strike down this dangerous rider, along with Senator Boxer, Gillibrand and Leahy.  The Senate will vote tomorrow, so you must take action TODAY.

    TAKE ACTION BEFORE THE SENATE VOTES:
    Fill out the form below to email your Senators, urging them to support the Tester amendment.

    The same powerful interests that spent $44 million to mislead voters in California about Proposition 37 are at it again.

    Now with Congress back in session, these agri-chemical companies are trying sneak a proposal into a must-pass piece of legislation to boost their profits at the expense of your right to know. They want to allow GMO seeds to be planted even if a court finds they were approved illegally.

    The House could vote on this soon, so we need more Representatives on our side.  In addition, Senator Leahy, Chair of the Appropriation Committee, is the key to blocking passage in the Senate.

    Tell the FDA and Congress: Label GMOs!

    The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may soon approve genetically engineered salmon, which would be the first genetically engineered animal on supermarket shelves in the United States. And the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is considering a new type of herbicide-resistant corn that will encourage the use of more chemicals in our food supply.  Every American deserves the right to know about their food, but current policy doesn’t require labels for genetically engineered foods.

    That's why a slew of celebrities have joined millions of Americans to speak out in favor of labeling genetically engineered foods. To name a few: Michael J. Fox from Spin City and Family Ties, Julie Bowen from Modern Family, Tom Colicchio from Top Chef, Emily VanCamp from Revenge, and Chevy Chase. That's right – some pretty famous folks are on our side and are raising awareness about labeling. Tell the FDA: Label GMOs!

    Meet Troy Roush.

    Troy is a fifth-generation corn and soybean farmer in Indiana, whose love for farming stems from years of hard work. Yet something differentiates Troy from the farmers who came before him: The crops he grows are genetically engineered.

    What makes Troy's story – and this new video – so powerful is that he supports labeling genetically engineered foods. Troy believes that consumers should be able to make an informed decision each time they go to the grocery store and that they have a right to know about their food, and what they’re feeding their families. He believes that labeling is “a win for farmers and a win for consumers.”

    Will you join a movement of concerned parents, farmers, business owners, and citizens across America to speak out about labeling and how our food is produced?

    Tell Congress: Label Genetically Engineered Foods!

    As consumers, we have a right to know how the food we buy is produced, including whether it's genetically engineered. Otherwise, we can't make informed choices about what's best for us and our families. It's time to label GMOs!

    We're facing an onslaught of potential new genetically engineered foods. One company has turned a popular fruit – the apple – into an industrialized product that avoids turning brown when it's cut or bruised. Plus the FDA is preparing to approve genetically engineered salmon, which would be the first genetically engineered animal on the market in the United States. But as consumers, we won't know the difference without mandatory labeling.

    The United States is one of the only developed nations not to require the labeling of genetically engineered foods. Even China labels them!

    Ask your members of Congress to support labeling of genetically engineered foods. They need to hear from constituents like you.

    Tell the FDA: Parents want labels for GMOs

    Parents want to provide their children with everything they need to excel in the classroom and at home – but how can parents guarantee the best for their children if they do not know about the food they feed them?

    We are facing an onslaught of food products that we know nothing about: pink slime, corn resistant to the toxic 2,4-D herbicide, and apples genetically engineered to never turn brown.  It is easy to see why more than one million Americans have already contacted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asking for mandatory labeling of GE foods.  And they are not alone: nearly 90% of American parents want GE foods labeled.

    The FDA needs to hear from more parents.  Join the fight and ask the federal government to provide us adequate information about our food so we can make informed and smart choices for our families.

  • Tell the USDA and EPA to reject 2,4-D resistant corn!

    The USDA and EPA are about to apply extra scrutiny on Dow’s 2,4-D-resistant corn called “Enlist.” It's genetically engineered to withstand large doses of 2,4-D, which some studies have shown may be linked to reproductive abnormalities, birth defects, and several forms of cancer.

    Although we might not all agree on the science concerning the long-term effects of eating genetically engineered foods, we should be able to decide for ourselves whether to feed them to our families. But if this new corn is approved, we won't be able to make that choice since genetically engineered foods aren't labeled.

    All in the name of profit from selling seeds, pesticides, and herbicides to farmers, greedy companies want to rush untested and unproven crops from their factories to our dinner tables.  Specifically, these irresponsibly greedy industries are investing millions to:

    ·      Strip the courts of their powers to stop the planting of unproven genetically engineered crops;

    ·      Tie the hands of the USDA, and in some instances compel it to permit the planting of unproven GE crops;

    ·      Outlaw any review of genetically engineered crops’ impacts under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA);

    ·      Prohibit other agencies from offering USDA any expert advice in the review process for GE crops;

    ·      Force the approval of genetically engineered crops through unreasonably short deadlines which if not met by USDA, would result in immediate approval and commercialization; and,

    ·      Limit EPA’s oversight of genetically engineered crops to only those that produce or contain a pesticide.

    But today you have a chance to fight back: contact the USDA and EPA while they begin their intensive review of 2,4-D-resistant corn.

  • Tell Lawmakers to Protect American Consumers!

    Chemical companies have inserted dangerous riders into the House version of the Farm Bill that would hijack the federal regulatory process for new GE crops. If the provisions pass, new GE crops could be fast-tracked to the marketplace without evaluation by federal agencies. Federal agencies ought to thoroughly assess the safety of GE crops before they're introduced to store shelves and our homes.

    Tell lawmakers to reject the proposed riders and stand up to the powerful interests that want to deny us our right to know what's in our food!

  • Contact Your Representative Today!

    The "Farmer Assurance Provision", a new legislative rider, will extend the control of chemical companies by stripping federal courts of their authority to halt the sale and planting of an unapproved GE crop while the USDA assesses its potential hazards.  This unprecedented move would place consumer concerns on a back burner and allow farmers to grow potentially dangerous GE crops during legal appeals of the approval process, instead of afterwards.

    Our Founding Fathers wisely put a separation of powers in our U.S. Constitution to protect the rights of average citizens.  This provision was inserted into the FY 2013 Agriculture Appropriations Bill by powerful interests who not only do not want Americans to know what is in their foods, but who do not want to follow the laws, regulations, and system of jurisprudence that have been established to protect human health and the environment.

    Please ask your representative to remove the “Farmer Assurance Provision” from the FY 2013 Agriculture Appropriations Bill.  Thank you for your continued support!
