In this session we will explore efforts to increase the impact of community gardens on the well being of our gardeners. Public awareness campaigns have paid off in helping people understand the importance of a healthy diet, and have opened a window of opportunity to reach under-served communities. They are eager to learn what to do with all that healthy stuff from the garden and knowledge is power.
Joy Goetz is a Registered Dietitian (RD) with Open Hand Atlanta, an organization that delivers home meals to thousands of shut-ins with health issues. Joy has implemented community garden nutrition programs at several senior centers and senior housing complexes and she serves on the Atlanta Local Food Initiative steering committee.
Fred Conrad is Community Garden Coordinator with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, providing volunteer, mechanical and technical support to over a hundred community gardens. Fred participates in the WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program and coordinates the Atlanta Area Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign, which provides high value local produce to people in need.
