Tell President Obama: The time is right, the world is ready to eliminate nuclear weapons

In the past year, we’ve seen the signs that most of the world is ready to negotiate the elimination of nuclear weapons. From a UN Open Ended Working Group to the 127 governments that convened in Oslo to discuss the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons, and this September’s High-Level Meeting at the U.N. it’s clear that other leaders are coming to the table ready to negotiate.

But time after time, the U.S. has refused to participate in these multilateral forums. The U.S. boycotted the Oslo conference and is refusing to participate in the UN disarmament working group. The Middle East nuclear non-proliferation conference that the U.S. was supposed to co-convene was postponed indefinitely. And the Obama Administration has been silent on the high-level disarmament meeting.

Calling for good-faith U.S. participation in these multilateral forums, two dozen peace and disarmament groups sent a letter to the White House on June 6. On June 24, the U.S. Conference of Mayors unanimously adopted a resolution calling for U.S. leadership in global elimination of nuclear weapons and redirection of military spending to domestic needs.

Clearly, the world is ready. Please urge President Obama to lead the U.S. into these critical negotiations.
