DC Council: Stay Strong, Pass the Minimum Wage and Sick Leave Bills With No Amendments

On Tuesday, the DC Council voted unanimously in favor of the Earned Sick and Safe Leave  Act and the Minimum Wage Act. This was a huge victory for working people in DC and we want to thank our DC Councilmembers for their strong support.

However, the final vote on both bills is not until December 17th and the bills could still be amended. Business and restaurant association lobbyists will be working to weaken our bills till the final vote. We have already heard of an effort to weaken retaliation protection for workers who speak up when their employers violate the paid sick days law. This would let some employers get away with firing their employees for speaking out about their rights. This clause is important, because many employees fear they will be fired for simply filing a claim to get what is required under the law. 

In order to prevent special interests from weakening these two bills, send an email today to encourage the DC Councilmembers to stay strong in their commitment to paid sick days and raising the minimum wage and vote against any amendments that would weaken the bills.
