Rather than promote consumer and enviromental protection, the Attorney General has decided to use his office to advance a personal and political agenda that targets doctors and clinics that provide abortion care. We have seen this play out in other states and we know what's coming - months of constant attacks that they hope will result in hardcore anti-choice legislation. Zealots like Mr. Morrisey and the fundamentalist organizations that support him will not stop.
In his latest display of grandstanding Mr. Morrisey opened a public comment period for people in West Virginia and 'elsewhere' to weigh in on a host of abortion-related topics. See his call here: www.wvago.gov.
The Attorney General seems to think his role is that of a legislator's rather than the state's top attorney. In fact, it would seem that he doesn't understand West Virginia regulation and law at all. As the top attorney, he should know that a woman's heath clinic is regulated just like any other medical facility of its kind. Clinic doctors are regulated by the Board of Medicine, their nurses by the Board of Nurse Examiners, and so on. It's fully disingenuous to suggest that they are not regulated.
So go ahead, West Virginia! Tell the Attorney General what you think!
