Take Action: Refining dirtier oil threatens our health AND safety

Big Oil is planning to transport huge amounts of lower quality crude oil (such as tar sands) by train, ship, and pipeline to be refined at Bay Area refineries.

Refining dirtier oil emits far more pollutants. Dirtier crude is corrosive and eats away at refining machinery, making refineries more prone to industrial accidents. And as we’ve seen in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, rail transport of low-quality crude can trigger tragic results for near-by communities. The crude oil that was being shipped in the Lac-Megantic derailment, is the same type currently being transported into Richmond.

The proposed train routes transporting dirtier crude passes through many East Bay towns: Benicia, Pittsburg, Richmond, and many other communities, placing them in physical and environmental jeopardy.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) has the power to protect air quality for the whole region. Sign the petition below so we can move the BAAQMD to adopt community/refinery worker demands that will protect the health and safety of residents and workers. Learn more.
