Michigan: Measure to Decriminalize Marijuana Possession Introduced

A bi-partisan coalition of lawmakers has introduced legislation, House Bill 4623, that would make the possession of up to an ounce of marijuana a civil infraction, punishable by a fine of up to $100. The measure has been referred to the House Committee on Judiciary, but has yet to be scheduled for a hearing. Companion legislation, Senate Bill 626, has also been introduced. Under present law, possession of any amount of marijuana is a criminal misdemeanor, punishable by up to 1 year incarceration and a maximum fine of $2,000
