Illinois: Medical Marijuana Measure Awaits Action From Governor

Members of the Illinois Senate voted 35-21 on Friday, May 17, in favor of House Bill 01, to enact a statewide pilot program for the medical use of cannabis. HB 01 was previously approved by House lawmakers on Wednesday, April 17. You can view the full text of this proposal here.

The Senate vote sends the measure to the desk of Governor Pat Quinn, for final approval. Governor Quinn has publicly said that he is ‘open minded’ about the measure.

According to an April 2013 Fox News nationwide telephone poll of 1,010 adults, 85 percent of Americans favor allowing doctors to authorize specified amounts of marijuana for patients suffering from serious illnesses.

Since 1996, eighteen states and the District of Columbia have approved legislation allowing for the use of cannabis therapy by qualified patients.

Please take time today to urge Governor Pat Quinn to sign HB 01 into law by using the prewritten letter below.
