Maine: House Floor Falls Four Votes Short on Sending Marijuana Legalization to the Ballot

LD 1229, which would have placed the question of whether or not to legalize marijuana on the ballot in Maine this fall, fell four votes short of approval in a floor vote in the Maine House of Representatives. The measure, introduced by Rep. Diane Russell, was rejected in a 71 to 67 vote, one of the closest legislative votes ever recorded for a legalizaiton measure.

NORML would like to thank Rep. Russell for her tireless work supporting this measure and to the hundreds of you who emailed and called your Representatives and Senators in support of this legislation. We only managed to get this vote so close because of the outpouring of support via phone and email that Representatives heard from their constituents.

We will continue to update you on future reform efforts in Maine.
